Insurance protects us against damages that can occur to ourselves, our family, our homes, our cars or any other goods we own. Insurance companies provide a guarantee of compensation for a specified loss, in return for payment of a premium. They also provide you with a set of services to help you deal with the risk (e.g. damage to property or loss).

Because we are now surrounded by many technological devices, a major insurance company believes that minimizing risks and protecting people could reach a new height thanks to connected objects.

It’s called the “Internet of things”: a network of devices that contain embedded technology to communicate and interact with a user or the external environment.

There are a few usages that are starting to attract people, such as weather stations that tell you the weather forecast and tell you the temperature inside your home. When you are away, you connect to your home through an app and in case of a fire incident, you would know it immediately as the device would sense the temperature rise and warn you. Another connected object is a device that can be used remotely to lock and unlock the doors of your house.

You could also install small cameras to check if your kids are back home and even talk to them while you are still at the office.

A major insurance company would like to understand what frustrations and what expectations people have in terms of risk prevention. They believe that through connected objects, risk can be reduced and they want to envision services and products that use these objects.

Tell us a story where insurance companies protect us better, using connected objects in our homes.

Tell us inspiring stories in which connected homes (homes which use connected objects) can help prevent risks and protect ourselves.

Describe situations where you need connected objects and invent ideas for products or services that an insurance company could provide to address these needs.

We are looking for novel and original ideas. Think beyond what exists already (alarms, cameras, weather stations), or reinvent them in a unique way. We encourage you to think beyond what insurance companies already do.

There are many applications, functionalities and services that could help us protect our lives and homes. Start by identifying the risks and then look at how your insurance company could protect you and your home better thanks to connected objects and technology, providing new services.

There are three types of population your story can focus on:

  • Young single professionals, in their 20s.
  • Families with young children or teenagers.
  • Seniors (people above 60 with potentially some health problems).

Your story can either be based on one of these profiles, or you can use all of them and think about three different ideas.

Your entry must answer the three questions below:

  • What needs or frustrations does your idea address?
  • What is new about your project?
  • How does it mitigate risks?

The examples are only provided to illustrate our expectations. Please do not use them in your submission or it will be rejected.

There are many types of connected devices. A very obvious one is a smartphone. It collects and sends data easily.

A connected object that would help insurance companies to protect you better could be an acoustic sensor installed in the wine cellar to tell the homeowner who is away that there has been an intrusion.

You could also use a presence simulation device when you’re not at home by opening and closing shutters or by turning lights on and off.

Insurance companies could also provide a health monitor that collects patient data, allowing self-diagnosis. It could give tips to achieve better diet and send warning signals if it finds anything wrong with the data collected. The insurance company could then be informed and send a doctor to that person. Explain the frustrations and needs linked to these solutions and you’ll get a good entry!
